Social media platforms give you access to an overwhelming number of metrics. Impressions, reach, likes, comments, shares, saves, profile visits, follower count, engagement rate, click-through rate — the list goes on. For founders trying to grow, it is tempting to track everything. But that leads to analysis paralysis.
After working with hundreds of brands, we have identified the five metrics that actually predict and drive growth. Focus on these, and ignore the rest.
1. Engagement Rate
Engagement rate is the percentage of your audience that actively interacts with your content (likes, comments, shares, saves). This is the single most important metric because it directly influences how the algorithm treats your content. A high engagement rate signals to the platform that your content is valuable, which increases your organic reach.
Benchmark: 3-6% is good for most platforms. Above 6% is excellent.
2. Save Rate
Saves are the most underrated metric in social media. When someone saves your post, they are telling the algorithm: "this content is so valuable that I want to come back to it." Saves have a stronger impact on reach than likes or comments on Instagram and LinkedIn.
To increase saves, create content that serves as a reference: checklists, frameworks, step-by-step guides, and data-driven insights.
3. Profile Visits
Profile visits indicate curiosity. When someone sees your content and clicks through to your profile, they are considering following you or learning more about your brand. A high profile visit rate means your content is generating interest beyond the individual post.
If your posts get engagement but low profile visits, your content might be entertaining but not building brand awareness. Add clear hooks that make people want to know more about you.
4. Follower Growth Rate
Raw follower count is a vanity metric. What matters is your growth rate — the percentage of new followers you gain each week or month. A steady growth rate indicates that your content strategy is working and reaching new audiences.
Track this weekly. If growth stalls, it is time to experiment with new content formats or topics.
5. Click-Through Rate (CTR)
If your social media strategy includes driving traffic to your website, landing page, or product, CTR is essential. It measures how effectively your posts convert attention into action.
Low CTR usually means your call-to-action is weak or your link placement is poor. Test different CTAs, use link-in-bio tools, and make the value of clicking obvious.
