What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
Definition
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making content easy for generative AI engines, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, to find, trust and cite in their answers.
Why it matters
More people now get answers from AI instead of a list of links. If AI engines don't cite your brand, you miss those people even when you rank in classic search. The term comes from a 2023 research paper that reported GEO methods could raise visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%.
How to do it
- Start from strong SEO: pages must be crawlable and indexed.
- Answer the question directly in the first sentences, in plain language.
- Add specific facts, numbers, examples and sources that AI can quote.
- Structure pages with clear headings, lists and tables.
- Keep content current and consistent across your site and profiles.
Example
A brand publishes “How to choose single origin coffee beans” with a two-sentence answer up top, a comparison table and cited sources. AI answers start quoting its definition.
GEO vs. SEO vs. AEO
SEO aims to rank pages in search results. AEO aims to be the direct answer, like a featured snippet or voice answer. GEO aims to be cited inside AI-generated answers. They overlap, and good SEO is the base for all three.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages in search results | Be the direct answer | Be cited inside AI answers |
| Where it shows | Classic search results | Featured snippets, voice answers | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews |
| What helps most | Crawlable, relevant, linked pages | Short answers under question headings | Quotable facts, examples and sources |

Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Google says pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in AI Overviews, so SEO remains the foundation.
Do I need special markup for GEO?
Google says no special schema or AI text files are required for its AI features. Clear, well-structured, useful content matters most.
